Artist Inspiration

Inspired by the legendary Native American Medicine Hat Horse. Bred for Battle encapsulates the spirit of two untamed warriors. During my time working on a horse ranch in Wyoming, I witnessed the birth of a high-spirited colt. The local sherriff, familiar with the old tale, shared the legend of the Medicine Hat Breed—a rare and revered line of horses with white coats and dark heads and ears, considered a war bonnet. Some have a shield on their chest and one or two blue eyes.

These horses were said to be destined for the warriors of great tribes: medicine men, chiefs, and legendary fighters. It was believed that the riders of these horses could not be hurt. The lore spoke of a broodmare carrying her foal for 13 months before passing away. In the 13th month, our mare gave birth and then stopped eating and drinking. The legend, in that moment, began to unravel before my eyes.

It is said that many Medicine Hat Horses played a pivotal role in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. This sculpture, Bred for Battle, is my homage to that story. It portrays an untamed, free-spirited horse, moving as one with its fearless rider—a symbol of strength, resilience, and the deep bond between warrior and steed.
